The Maratón de San José is a loop course through Costa Rica's capital, run in December during the dry season. The course centres on Parque La Sabana - a large urban park on the western edge of the city centre, formerly the site of San José's original airport - and runs through the main boulevards of the city, including Paseo Colón and the surrounding commercial districts.
The critical factor for international runners is altitude. San José sits at approximately 1,170 metres above sea level. Runners who normally train near sea level will typically experience reduced aerobic capacity equivalent to 2--5% slower pacing at this elevation, depending on individual sensitivity and fitness. This is not high enough for severe altitude sickness but is significant enough to affect race times. Arriving two to three days early provides partial acclimatisation.
December is the dry season in Costa Rica's Central Valley - the best month of the year for running conditions in San José. Temperatures at race time are 18--24°C with low humidity and no rain. The combination of dry conditions and moderate temperatures partially offsets the altitude effect. A field of approximately 5,000 finishers makes this one of Central America's larger marathons.

Race Weekend
Expo and Number Collection
Check maratondesanjose.com for the current expo location, dates, and hours. Number collection is required before race morning.
Getting to the Start
The start area is in central San José near Parque La Sabana. Taxis and Uber are the practical options for race morning. Journey time from La Sabana and Escazú area hotels is 5--15 minutes. Allow 45 minutes before your start time.
The Course
The course runs through the central boulevards of San José, incorporating laps around Parque La Sabana and the surrounding streets. San José has some elevation change in its urban roads, but the course avoids the steep hills of the outer suburbs. The altitude effect is present throughout - this is not a flat-course PB race, but the December conditions and manageable urban terrain make it a strong destination event.
The Finish
The finish is in the La Sabana area. Post-race refreshments and medal collection are in the finish zone. Taxis and Uber are available nearby for the return to hotels.
Where to Stay
Stay in the La Sabana area or Escazú. La Sabana is immediately adjacent to the park at the centre of the course - the most practical position for runners who want to walk to the start. Escazú, the western suburb, has a higher concentration of mid-range and upscale hotels and is 15--20 minutes by taxi from the course.
Book two to three months ahead. December is the start of high season in Costa Rica, and San José hotels fill for the holiday period. International flights to SJO also fill quickly in December - book everything early.
The largest and most reliable full-service hotel in the San José area, set in a hacienda-style property 15 minutes west of the course near the airport highway. Good for race weekend logistics if you have an early flight home.
Full-service hotel in Escazú, the upscale western suburb. Close to the Multiplaza shopping centre and a 20-minute taxi to the La Sabana course area. Reliable for race weekend with pool and spa for recovery.
Well-located hotel in central San José, within walking distance of Parque La Sabana and the course area. The most practical option for runners who want to walk to the start rather than take a taxi.
Boutique Victorian mansion hotel near the Paseo Colón in central San José. Twelve renovated rooms with a well-regarded restaurant. The most characterful option close to the course area.
See & Do
San José itself has limited walking-distance attractions compared with the country's natural offerings, but the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum is genuinely worth a visit. The Arenal Volcano and Manuel Antonio on the Pacific coast are both achievable as one or two-night extensions from San José - December is the optimal month for both.
Museo del Oro Precolombino
Beneath the Plaza de la Cultura in central San José, a 15-minute taxi from the finish area. Over 1,600 gold objects from Costa Rican indigenous cultures spanning the period 500--1500 AD. The collection is the most significant in Central America. Allow 90 minutes; admission approximately $12 USD.
Mercado Central
The covered central market in downtown San José, built in 1880 and still functioning as a working food market. Sodas (small local restaurants) inside serve typical Costa Rican food: gallo pinto, casados, fresh fruit juices. It is loud, warm, and navigable in 45 minutes. Five minutes by taxi from the La Sabana finish area.
Parque La Sabana
The park at the centre of the race course - 72 hectares of grass, mature trees, a lake, and jogging paths. The Estadio Nacional (Costa Rica's main football stadium) is on its western edge. The Museo de Arte Costarricense occupies the former airport terminal at its eastern entrance. The most accessible post-race walk from the finish area.
After the Race
The Maratón de San José runs in early December. The dry season is in full effect across the Pacific coast and the Central Valley, making this one of the best months in the year to extend a Costa Rica trip. Arenal and the thermal springs are the most popular race extension; Manuel Antonio gives a beach and wildlife option. Both require road transfers - no domestic flights needed, though flights do exist to reduce journey time.
The Museo del Oro Precolombino (Pre-Columbian Gold Museum) occupies three floors beneath the Plaza de la Cultura. Over 1,600 gold objects from Costa Rican indigenous cultures spanning the period 500--1500 AD. Also in the same complex: the Museo de Numismática (currency history). Admission approximately $12 USD. Allow 90 minutes.
The Arenal Volcano (1,670m) last erupted actively in 2010 and is now largely dormant, though steam and minor activity continue. La Fortuna, the town at its base, has thermal hot springs fed by geothermal activity - a logical choice after a marathon. Shared shuttles from San José are approximately $25--40 USD and run daily. Tabacón and Baldi resorts are the best-known thermal options.
A small national park on the Pacific coast with white-sand beaches, capuchin monkeys at close range, sloths, and a manageable scale - the park can be covered in a day. December is dry season on the Pacific coast: the best time to visit. Quepos is the nearest town; direct shuttle services from San José run several times daily.
