Ljubljana Marathon·Day trip

Lake Bled: the Island Church, the Gorge, and Cream Cake

A glacial lake with an island church accessible only by wooden rowboat, a medieval castle on the cliff above, and the Vintgar Gorge 4km from the lake. One hour twenty minutes from Ljubljana by bus. October sees the beech forests around the lake at full autumn colour, and the summer crowds gone.

Lake Bled is approximately 55km northwest of Ljubljana. The bus from Ljubljana Bus Station (direct Alpetour service) takes around 1 hour 20 minutes and costs approximately €7.50 single; buses run hourly throughout the day. A taxi from Ljubljana takes about 45 minutes and costs approximately €50--60 one way. The bus is the correct choice for a day trip; the taxi makes sense if you are continuing to the Julian Alps or Bohinj rather than returning.

The Ljubljana Marathon falls on 18 October 2026, placing it in the peak of Slovenian autumn. The beech forests on the hillsides around Lake Bled turn amber and gold from mid-October; the reflection of the Karavanke mountains on the still lake surface is at its most photogenic before the first winter cloud cover settles in November. The summer volume of visitors - Bled is Slovenia's most-photographed location and receives 2.5 million visitors per year - has reduced significantly by October. The rowing boats (pletnas) still operate; the castle is fully open; the restaurants along the shoreline are running but not full.

October at Lake Bled: Temperatures 5--14°C in mid-October; the possibility of rain and mist in the mornings; afternoon windows of clarity. The Vintgar Gorge closes for the season on 31 October.

The Lake Circuit

The lake perimeter is 6km on a flat path. On post-marathon legs, the full circuit is achievable; it is also entirely non-mandatory. The most useful sections: the southern shore from the bus station area to the rowing boat landing stages (approximately 1km), and the north shore from the castle approach back toward the Bled town promenade.

The island church (Church of the Assumption, Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja): accessible only by wooden pletna rowboat, operated by local families under a permit system that has continued for three centuries. The crossing takes approximately 20 minutes each way and costs approximately €18 for the return trip. The 99 steps from the landing stage to the church are a Slovenian wedding tradition - the groom carries the bride up them. The view from the church steps across the lake to the castle and the Karavanke range is the one on every postcard. Bell-ringing from the church bell is said to grant a wish.

Bled Castle (Blejski Grad): perched on a 130-metre cliff above the north shore. Reached by a steep path (approximately 15--20 minutes uphill from the castle road) or a road accessible by taxi. Built from the eleventh century; the current structure is largely sixteenth century with a courtyard, chapel, museum of Slovenian history, and a restaurant with vertiginous terrace views. Entry approximately €15; the path is the challenge on post-marathon legs rather than the castle interior.

Vintgar Gorge

The Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar) is 4km from central Bled. On foot from the lake it is a 45-minute walk through farmland; a taxi from Bled costs approximately €8--10. The gorge is open until 31 October; the day-trip timing from Ljubljana after a Sunday marathon means the visit most likely falls on Monday 19 or Tuesday 20 October, well within the window.

The gorge is 1.6km long and entirely on wooden walkways fixed to the gorge walls above the Radovna River, which runs through a sequence of rapids and pools. The path ends at the Šum waterfall. Return is on the same walkway (no loop circuit). Allow 2 hours including the walk in and out. Entry approximately €10. The gorge is narrow and the light is low in October - the water colour is green-grey and the walls close overhead. Bring a waterproof layer.

Kremšnita

Kremšnita - vanilla custard and whipped cream between two layers of pastry - is a Bled speciality, not available at this specification anywhere else in Slovenia. Park Restaurant on Cesta svobode opposite the lake has served the standard version since 1953. The price has increased since then; the recipe has not. Eating one is not optional.

Bled Pub Ostarija on Grajska cesta near the castle descent does decent Slovenian lunch food (bean soup, štruklji, grilled meats) at prices oriented toward locals rather than tourists.

Getting Back

Alpetour buses return from Bled to Ljubljana Bus Station throughout the afternoon and evening. The last direct service is typically around 20:30; check timetables at alpetour.si. The journey is the same 1 hour 20 minutes.
