The Volkswagen Ljubljana Marathon starts and finishes at Kongresni Trg (Congress Square) on Slovenska Cesta in the centre of the Slovenian capital. The course is a flat single loop through the city streets and the surrounding urban area. October conditions - cool, low humidity, with the possibility of sun on good days - suit fast running. The 2026 edition is the 30th; the race has been a fixture in the autumn marathon calendar since 1996.
A field of approximately 8,000 finishers makes this one of the smaller marathons in this collection, which gives race day a different quality. The start and finish are in the same place; the city is compact; the atmosphere is more club than mass event. For runners who find large-field races impersonal, Ljubljana is a genuinely different experience.
The marathon takes place on the third Sunday of October - 18 October 2026. The timing is the other reason to race here: the Julian Alps reach peak autumn foliage in the third week of October. Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, both accessible by train and bus from Ljubljana in under 90 minutes, are in their best week of the year. Postojna Cave is climate-controlled and seasonally irrelevant. The Slovenian coast retains warmth and loses its summer crowd. This is not a marginal season for the region.

Race Weekend
Expo and Number Collection
Number collection typically takes place at Hala Tivoli (the City Sports Hall near Tivoli Park), on Saturday before race Sunday. Check ljubljanskimaraton.si for the current venue, opening hours, and any changes to the Saturday-only collection window. Collection on race morning is not available.
Getting to the Start
The start is at Kongresni Trg in the city centre. Most central and Old Town hotels are within 5--15 minutes' walk. There is no significant transport challenge on race morning. Ljubljana's city buses operate normally; the centre is compact enough that walking is the default.
The Course
The course loops through Ljubljana's city streets, passing through the urban neighbourhoods east and south of the centre before returning to Kongresni Trg. The route is flat throughout; there is no significant elevation change. October conditions - cool air, growing morning light, the plane trees along Slovenska Cesta typically in autumn colour by the third week of the month - make this a course suited to comfortable, even pacing.
The Finish
The finish is at Kongresni Trg, the same square where the race began. The post-race area, bag collection, and medal presentation are all in the city centre. Walking back to your hotel from the finish is a realistic option for most centrally located accommodation.
Where to Stay
Stay in central Ljubljana or the Old Town. The start and finish are at Kongresni Trg, which is the effective centre of gravity for race weekend - walking distance from virtually every hotel in the city core. There is no strategic consideration about which side of the city to prefer.
The Old Town (Stari Trg) gives the best access to the Ljubljana Castle cable car, the covered market colonnade along the Ljubljanica, and the restaurant streets of Stari Trg and Gornji Trg. The city centre around Prešernov Trg gives better transport access for the post-race excursion week.
Book two to three months ahead. October in Ljubljana is off-peak; most accommodation categories have availability closer to the race than a Major marathon would allow.
The tallest building in Ljubljana, directly on Slovenska Cesta - the same street as the start line. Rooftop bar with views over the city and the Julian Alps on clear days.
Ljubljana's landmark art nouveau hotel, built in 1905. A building worth staying in for its own sake, with a grand entrance hall and a position between the train station and the city centre.
Design hotel in the Old Town, a short walk from the Ljubljanica river and the market colonnade. The most characterful mid-range option in Ljubljana, with good access to both the city centre and the castle quarter.
A reliable mid-range business hotel in the park district, a short walk from Kongresni Trg. Large rooms for the price; a practical choice for runners who want space without overpaying.
A former Yugoslav army prison converted to a hostel, with each cell individually designed by a different artist. Private rooms available. The Metelkova alternative art district surrounds it. The most unusual budget accommodation in Slovenia.
See & Do
Ljubljana's historic centre is compact, mostly flat, and entirely walkable from the finish at Kongresni Trg. The Ljubljanica river divides the old town from the newer city centre; Plečnik's bridges and market colonnades along the water are the defining public spaces of the city.
Prešernov Trg and the Triple Bridge
Five minutes' walk from Kongresni Trg. The central square of Ljubljana is anchored by the pink Franciscan church, the statue of the Romantic poet France Prešeren, and Plečnik's Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) - three bridges crossing the Ljubljanica simultaneously, the original from 1842 flanked by two pedestrian bridges added by the architect Jože Plečnik in 1931. The effect is the one in every photograph of Ljubljana. The riverbanks on both sides are lined with café terraces; in October, the outdoor tables have blankets.
The Central Market Colonnade
The Central Market (Plečnikov trg / Vodnikov trg), 0.4km from Kongresni Trg along the Ljubljanica, is the city's main food market, housed under a Plečnik-designed colonnade from the 1940s along the river bank. On Saturdays the open-air stalls extend onto the riverside promenade, selling honey, mushrooms, klobasa, and the root vegetables that October in central Europe produces. The colonnade is entirely flat and the walk from Prešernov Trg to the market is five minutes along the river.
Ljubljana Castle
The castle occupies the hill above Stari Trg, reached by a cable car (the funicular) from Krekov Trg: two minutes, approximately €4 return. The castle complex contains a museum covering Ljubljana's history, a viewing tower, and a peristyle open space with views over the city and, on clear October days, the Julian Alps to the north. The cable car means the climb is accessible on any day of post-marathon recovery; the viewing tower involves a short internal staircase.
Metelkova
Metelkova, 1.5km from Kongresni Trg along Metelkova Ulica, is a former Yugoslav National Army barracks occupied by squatters in 1993 and transformed into an autonomous cultural zone. The compound is covered in murals and installations; the galleries, clubs, and outdoor bars operate from afternoon into the night. It is the most unexpected thing in Ljubljana and worth the twenty-minute walk from the finish, ideally on day two when the legs have loosened.
After the Race
The Ljubljana Marathon takes place on the third Sunday of October. The autumn foliage in the Julian Alps peaks in the same week. Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj are at or near their most photogenic. The Soča Valley, three to four hours from Ljubljana by car, is in the specific amber and green that the photographs on its tourism material are always taken from but rarely timed correctly. This is not a compromise season for Slovenia: it is, for a runner arriving in October, the best possible timing.
The four-night Julian Alps Circuit requires car hire. All other itineraries work by public transport or a combination of bus and train. Post-marathon legs are accounted for throughout: flat terrain where possible, trains that move while you sit, and no compulsory climbs before the third day.
A medieval castle 130 metres above the northern shore. A Baroque church on an island reached by traditional pletna boat. The lakeside circuit is 6km and entirely flat. The third week of October is at or near peak autumn foliage for the surrounding beech and larch. One of the more preposterously photogenic places in central Europe, and quiet in the week after the marathon.
The Postojna cave system extends for 24km at a constant 10°C; the visit includes a 3.7km electric train ride and a 1.7km guided walk past the olm - a blind cave salamander that lives for over a century. Predjama Castle, 9km away, is built into a 123-metre vertical cliff and has been there since the twelfth century.
Lake Bohinj is larger, quieter, and in late October arguably more beautiful than Bled - a glacial basin 4.35km long with the Julian Alps reflected in it, no castle, no summer crowds. The Savica Waterfall (78 metres) and the Vogel Cable Car (to 1,540 metres) add vertical options for legs that have recovered. Car hire from Ljubljana or Bled simplifies the logistics considerably.
A Venetian-built town on a narrow Adriatic peninsula, unchanged in its Mediterranean Gothic character since the Serenissima held it until 1797. The sea in October is around 17°C; the summer population has gone home. Portorož, 5km south, offers spa and salt-mud bath facilities specifically useful for post-marathon recovery.
Bled, Bohinj, the Soča Valley via the Vršič Pass (check promet.si before committing - the pass can close in mid-October), and the Kobarid Museum covering the Isonzo Front with the seriousness it deserves. The Soča River runs the specific turquoise that no photograph properly records. The most complete single journey Slovenia offers a runner arriving in October.
